It turns out that James’ true identity is that of a cis woman who had taken on a masculine name and internet persona, in order to make financial ends meet. Depressing all round, but it only reinforces “Chartrand’s” main thrust, which is that buying into sexist culture will get a woman rewarded.

OK, so this whole business is ridiculous. I would have been *very* interested in the scenario from Sady’s first paragraph–what if a woman blogger wrote honestly, but used a male name? How might things be different for her, in terms of pay, respect, etc? *That* would be a worthwhile social experiment. I’d also be interested in a transman’s honest blog, but that doesn’t seem to be what’s going on here.

Hmmm, if the female-identified internet folks are now picking silly over-the-top man-identities (or mandentities, I guess), I suppose I’d better get in on it early, even if I haven’t got my own blog or anything. It’s apparently the cutting edge of feminism. So, in part inspired by Sady and Amanda’s “real” identities, here’s introducing 19th-century British-type big game hunter Lord Everett Dudely, Earl of Manleigh and Ballsey. He’s a guy with a shit-ton of huge animal heads on the wall of his smoky billiard room, where he indulges in extra-manly doses of brandy and cigars (though I have to admit I actually like brandy and even the very occasional cigar, despite my ladyness) with his consummately dick-having cohorts, and laments how he simply does not understand the delicate weaker vessel. This is my totally feminist mandentity which I can use to get ahead in the world until such time as I think of something more crazy-uber-macho.

I would just like to say that, right now, I am calling and predicting Troll Technique #207: It Was A Social Experiment, Haha, You Should Have Seen Your Faces! Just, so, y’know, I can say ‘I SAW IT COMING AHA!’ when it happens. If it happens. Regardless of whether or not it turns out that James Chartrand is actually a dude who wrote one post about being a lady, or actually a lady who put on a ridiculous dude persona like an ugly hat. So there!

I only skimmed the original piece in which Chartrand came out, so I’m not familiar with the content of Men With Pens. But just given the name of her blog, she was obviously laying the dudeliness on a bit thick.
My question is, however, might there be some ironic merit to the fact that so many people bought into this masculine manly-man routine? I mean bought it so hard as to buy Chartrand a nice house? Might the success of her macho douchewad persona illuminate to the world its uncritical embrace of macho douchewadiness and shed just a little light on how ridiculous it all is?
