Next month I will be speaking at South By Southwest! I’ve been invited to lead a core conversation on Dealing With Internet Drama in the Feminist Discourse with the event’s creator, Rachel McCarthy James of Deeply Problematic.
One of the perks of speaking at SXSW is a free badge for the Film and Interactive festivals. Here is a partial list of the things I am going to try to catch while I’m there:
- Why Would We Think Social Media Is Revolutionary?
- blacktino
- The New Queer Media
- Radical Openness: Growing TED by Giving it Away
- Getting Strategic with Social Media for Social Good
- Infinite Jest and the Internet
- Re-branding Birth Control: Behavior Change through Design
- The Female Funny: Is It Different For Girls?
- The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye
- Natural Selection
- Who Took the Bomp? Le Tigre on Tour
If there are any other events or films you’d like me to cover, leave suggestions in the comment section or message me on Twitter.

Food suggestions for Austin (if you are able to get away from downtown):
1.) Curra’s (get the mole)
2.) Casa de Luz, macrobiotic
3.) Kerby Lane/Magnolia (get the queso with all the fixins)
4.) Ruby’s BBQ
5.) Eastside Showroom
6.) Lucky’s Puccia
7.) Best Wurst
Oh. Oops. The internet informs me that you know Austin very well. My bad!
No problem at all! I’ve only ever been to Kerbey Lane/Magnolia and I’m always looking for good places to get food.
Can I make a comment that the link for “The Talking Cure: Making Online Discourse Suck Less” opens a kinda sucky page with no discourse. Sounds neat, but no abstract? I know this isn’t your fault Garland, I just wanted to point it out.
It sounds like SXSW Interactive has better stuff going on than last year! At least, of greater interest to a Feminist BLogger!
I am super excited to hear about The Female Funny. It’s a near-constant topic of conversation among my improviser friends.
Kerbey Lane and Magnolia are two different restaurants, FYI.

Kindly deconstruct that for me. The anger in my head won’t process all that is wrong with it. I’m getting that women are made for getting fucked, in order to get pregnant for the betterment of society; their bodies are wonderful ONLY BECAUSE they work in sync/”created for” men’s bodies; etc etc. I just have to keep remembering that the asshole who posted this sucked at his job, was not hired back in that same capacity, and that said job was given to me, a lady. Then I have to remember to have the class not to rub it in his face, but oh it is very difficult…
I would also recommend Torchy’s Tacos, if you’ve never been, and also all the free swag/booze/food you can eat, because that is my favorite part of sxsw!
Shameless promotion, but come see us if you have a chance- we’re a short helmed by a lesbian director of color, with a female protagonist (Jessica Pare of Mad Men), that deals with queer issues in the scope of modern American politics.
Plus it’s a sci-fi venture produced by public broadcasting, so nerdy good fun for all!
We’ll be part of the “Futurestates” series of shorts- come check us out!
